2014 Saline Scarecrow Contest Winners Crowned

Dance Alliance company 3 members enjoy winning 1st place in Group category of 2014 3rd Annual Saline Scarecrow Contest

Dance Alliance, company 3 members celebrate in front of their 1st place winning entry in the Group category.

You probably noticed them when you were downtown Saline this past month.  They arrived slowly attaching themselves to the trees and light poles and in the end there were 24 of them bringing a fun, artistic and playful air to the downtown Saline business district.  Yes I'm talking about the straw filled creations that were part of the 3rd Annual Saline Scarecrow Contest.  The month of October in downtown Saline has started to become synonymous with scarecrows and this year the number of entries expanded to 24 participants.  Also expanding were the categories that winners were picked by voters.  In order to make the contest a little more fair, participants could enter as either an Individual (3 or less creators), a Group (4 or more), a Small Business (less than 50 employees) or Large Business (50 or more employees).

The Small Business category was certainly the most competitive with 11 entries, while the individual category was the least crowded with only 3 entries.  The Group category had entries ranging from a youth group from St. Paul United Church of Christ, to Mr. Garbarz's 3rd Grade Class at Pleasant Ridge School.  While the Large Business category saw some new entries in Flatout Bread as well as the return of Saline Parks & Recreation for a second year of participation.  After most of the entries arrived the voting began and continued on until October 31st at midnight.  Anyone could cast a vote for their favorite by simply visiting the scarecrow website.  The voting has concluded and the winners have been crowned.
